The Spaniel is one of the oldest recognised gun dog breeds in the UK. Originally when a litter was bred, the kennel master or breeder would define the dogs from the litter by their side and weight and working ability, the leggy dog would be a springer, the smaller squarer dog, the Cocker and the shorter heavier set dog, the Field, usually the black dog, this gave rise to their name the black Spaniel. Defined breeding and concentration of each breed separated them over the years, although the Field was still known as the Black Spaniel for many years.
The Field Spaniel has never enjoyed the popularity of its cousins, the Springer or the Cocker, its slightly slower movement and more reserved nature leaving only the loyal supports to keeping the breed alive for so long.
Sadly fashions in breeding and bottle necking of lines nearly lost the breed entirely on more than one occasion. The situation became so bad, DNA from other breeds was used in a highly irregular move in order to save it from extinction. Which is why there is now slight distinctions between breed lines.

Field spaniels today, whilst still low in numbers are supported by loyal fans. They can be found as far away as Europe, America and even a few in Australia. Fields were first exported over to the states back in the late 1800's and are still regular used for working roles in the US.
field trials, for working dogs, are run here in the Uk and regularly in the US . In parts of Europe, as a working breed, they require a working certificate before they can earn titles at dog shows.
